More

Dr. Yingchun Zhang is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Miami, with joint appointments in the Desai Sethi Urology Institute and the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. His research integrates neural engineering, multimodal neuroimaging, and neuromodulation to advance precision rehabilitation for movement disorders, chronic pain, and psychiatric conditions. He has published extensively in leading journals and conferences, holds multiple U.S., European, and international patents, and has founded startups dedicated to translating neuroengineering innovations into clinical applications.

Dr. Zhang is a recipient of the NIH Pathway to Independence (K99/R00) Award and the 12th Annual Delsys Prize for Innovation in Electromyography, and in 2025 was elected a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). He serves as a standing member for the NIH study section: Motor Function, Speech and Rehabilitation (MFSR), a Topic Editor (Neural Engineering) of Biomedical Engineering Letters, and Associate Editor for multiple peer-reviewed journals, including IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation EngineeringJournal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation, and Neurourology and Urodynamics

Precision Rehabilitation

Dr. Zhang’s research aims to advance Precision Rehabilitation by integrating multimodal neuroimaging, neuroengineering, neuromodulation, and machine learning to quantitatively characterize brain and muscle activation dynamics and elucidate brain–muscle interactions. His research develops innovative approaches for disease diagnosis, phenotyping, and personalized interventions for neurological, neurodegenerative, and neuromuscular disorders, including stroke, spinal cord injury, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, pelvic floor dysfunctions, and related movement and pain conditions. Dr. Zhang has authored approximately 200 peer-reviewed journal publications.
