Dr. Marlon L. Wong is a physical therapist and clinician–scientist whose work focuses on advancing mechanistic pain assessment and nonpharmacologic treatment strategies for individuals with complex neurological and medical conditions. He is an Associate Professor of Clinical in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Miami.
Dr. Wong’s research integrates quantitative sensory testing, autonomic measures (e.g., heart rate variability), and noninvasive neuromodulation approaches, including auricular vagus nerve stimulation and transcranial magnetic stimulation, to better understand and treat chronic pain. His work emphasizes translational, patient-centered approaches that address both biological mechanisms and contextual factors influencing pain and function.
He is actively developing precision neuromodulation strategies for populations with peripheral neuropathy such as people living with HIV and cancer survivors.
Mechanistic Pain Phenotyping and Precision Neuromodulation for Chronic Neuropathic Pain
- Mechanistic pain phenotyping (QST, neurophysiological markers)
- Noninvasive neuromodulation (auricular vagus nerve stimulation, TMS)
- Chronic neuropathic pain (including diabetes related, HIV-associated, and chemotherapy-induced neuropathy)
- Translational rehabilitation and nonpharmacologic pain management
- Patient-centered, context-sensitive approaches to pain and function
- Interdisciplinary models of pain in medically complex populations
