GIFTS OF STOCK

Donating shares of stock is a valuable alternative to traditional cash contributions. By gifting stock directly to The Miami Project, you may be able to bypass the capital gains tax that would otherwise be incurred if you sold the shares yourself. This method not only allows you to benefit from the tax advantages of a charitable donation but also supports our mission to cure paralysis.  When you contribute appreciated stock to The Miami Project, you do not need to pay taxes on the increase in value of your stock. This creates a beneficial scenario for both you and our cause: you receive a tax benefit while advancing our critical research efforts.

If you are considering a gift of securities to The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, you can choose from two convenient donation methods.  Please select the option that best suits your needs and follow the accompanying instructions.

OPTION #1 – Electronic Transfer for Stocks and Bonds
To electronically transfer stocks and bonds to The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, simply make a request in writing to your broker. Please direct your broker to transfer your securities to the following account:

Crediting: University of Miami Gift Account #44-32050 for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis only

Please instruct your broker to include:

• Donor Name
• Name of Shares (Ticker or CUIP)
• Number of Shares
• Tentative Date of the Transfer
• Purpose/Designation of the Gift
• Name of Brokerage, Firm Broker’s Name and Telephone Number

So that we are able to ensure proper acknowledgement of your gift for income tax purposes, please email at GiftManagement@miami.edu and Randy Medenwald, Senior Director of Advocacy and Donor Relations at rmedenwald@miami.edu.  The information provided should include donor name, type of shares, tentative date of transfer, purpose or designation of gift as well as name of brokerage firm, contact and phone.  Additionally, please provide donor contact information including address, phone and email.

OPTION #2 – Physical Delivery
If you have physical securities, you may deliver them in person, via registered mail, or by courier to:

If the certificates are registered in any name other than the University of Miami, the donor may endorse the security directly or execute a separate power to transfer ownership. The signature or signatures on the certificate or power must correspond exactly with the name or names registered on the security. The above signature(s) of the person(s) executing the Assignment must be guaranteed by a commercial bank, broker or trust company, bearing the “Medallion Guarantee.”

If the certificates are registered in your name, it will be necessary for you to provide an Irrevocable Stock/Bond Power Form. If donating stock in multiple companies, please complete a separate form for each. For your protection, we recommend that you forward the securities and the irrevocable stock power form under separate cover. Please include your Gift Notification Form in the same package with the certificates.
