The Miami Project's clinical trials and translatio

The Miami Project's clinical trials and translational research programs remain at the heart of our efforts to develop new therapies and treatments for paralysis and other neurological diseases/disorders.

These initiatives hold promise of transforming the lives of these affected individuals, offering them hope and a pathway to recovery. These efforts are costly, so we rely on the generosity of our friends and donors to sustain and accelerate our work.

Some of the key areas where support is urgently needed:
Clinical Trials: We are conducting new and existing clinical trials utilizing brain computer interfaces, deep brain stimulation and neuroprotective strategies. These trials target both acute and chronic spinal cord injured individuals and are focused on walking and upper extremity function.

Innovative Therapies: Exciting advancements are being made with exosomes derived from Schwann cells, neural and mesenchymal stem cells. They are showing significant promise to potentially treat spinal cord injury, ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, and traumatic brain injuries.

Drug Discovery: Our Drug Discovery and Development Program is changing the field of research and medicine for those suffering from paralysis and other diseases. Our scientists are working to understand the molecular mechanisms that regulate axon growth and identify components of those mechanisms that can be targeted with drugs to induce robust axon regeneration. These drugs will be used to repair the injured Central Nervous System following traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke and MS.

Neurotrauma to the brain and spinal cord is a sign

Neurotrauma to the brain and spinal cord is a significant public health concern, impacting nearly 1.5 million Americans. Within this demographic are military personnel facing unique neurotrauma challenges. Researchers at The Miami Project are answering the call for new diagnostic and therapeutic agents in this group thanks to a $1.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense.

The DOD awarded the two-year grant for the project titled “Army Battlefield Exercise and Combat-Related Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)". SCI is a common combat injury with thousands of veterans living with various chronic disabilities. Likewise, TBI occurs in military personnel following cases of blunt head injury, shrapnel, or a blast wave from exploding bombs.

The Miami Project supporter and Buoniconti Fund Board Member Gloria Estefan hosted our 39th Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner in New York City last month.

While in town, she taped a segment for NBC TV’s The Kelly Clarkson Show to speak about the spectacular research and trials being done at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, a Center of Excellence at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

The segment will air today, Wednesday, October 16th, on The Kelly Clarkson Show.
