Homestead, Florida November 15, 2019 – Hall of Fame Drag Racer Darrell Gwynn was joined today by his NASCAR friends for the annual Hot Rods & Reels Fishing Tournament, presented by Huk, benefitting The Darrell Gwynn Quality of Life Chapter of The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis. The event is annually held on the infield lake at the Homestead-Miami Speedway and features NASCAR drivers and Legends fishing for a cause, and a Million Dollar Challenge sponsored by Huk.

“Today I was thrilled to have all our friends out on the lake here at Homestead-Miami Speedway.  Each year this tournament helps us raise some significant funds for The Buoniconti Fund and the paralysis research at The Miami Project, and provide a new wheelchair for a wonderful man who was unfortunately paralyzed in an accident,” said Darrell Gwynn.

More than 29 years after his last National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) win, and the accident that left him paralyzed, Darrell Gwynn and the Darrell Gwynn Chapter donated a custom wheelchair to 32 year old Jean Saint Ange, who was paralyzed last year in a fall.  The new wheelchair will allow him to be more independent and continue his rehabilitation.

The Bass Pro Team, led by NASCAR team owner Richard Childress, won with a three fish total of 12.84 pounds, and the largest fish a whopping of 7.72 pounds was caught by Paul Hileman.  Additional fishing tournament participants included: Cup Chase Participant Martin Truex, Jr., Bobby Allison, Paul Menard, Joey Gase and Joey Logano. Tournament partners and sponsors included Presenting Sponsor Huk, Homestead-Miami Speedway, Bass Pro Shops, Bass Online, NASCAR, Homestead Hospital.

The Darrell Gwynn Quality of Life Chapter of The Buoniconti Fund: In 1985, Barth A. Green, M.D. and NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Nick Buoniconti helped found The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis after Nick’s son, Marc, sustained a spinal cord injury during a college football game. Today, The Miami Project is the world’s most comprehensive spinal cord injury (SCI) research center, and a designated Center of Excellence at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.  The Darrell Gwynn Quality of Life Chapter of The Buoniconti Fund supports SCI research at The Miami Project and education and prevention programs. www.thebuonicontifund.com/darrellgwynn
