Developing Novel Therapies for Traumatic Brain Injury and Spinal Cord Injury

Research Interests

Coleen Atkins, Ph.D.

•The research in my laboratory focuses on developing novel therapeutic interventions for traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury.

•We are identifying the biochemical changes that underlie pathology in the CNS after trauma using molecular biology, biochemistry, and electrophysiology techniques.

•We are developing therapeutic strategies targeting maladaptive synaptic plasticity, the inflammatory response, edema (water accumulation and swelling of the brain), and axonal injury mechanisms.

•Our ultimate goal is to develop therapies that can be translated from the bench to bedside to treat patients.
